Black youth? Their answers are contained in Michele Foster’s book, Black Teachers on Teaching, which serves as a narrative scorecard of America’s educational success with children of color. Foster, a professor of education and a consultant, has gathered life-history interviews from twenty teachers who are drawn from a diverse pool.

Michele Foster collects wisdom from those who were the first to teach in desegregated southern schools and from others who taught in large urban districts, such as Boston, Los Angeles, and Philadelphia. All Research shows that when Black students have one Black teacher by 3rd grade, they're 13 percent more likely to enroll in college. With two Black teachers, that jumps to 32 percent. For Black boys from low-income households, their on-time high school graduation rate soars by 40 percent if they've had a Black educator (Gershenson et al., 2018).
